I’ve a few textbooks on my Kindle reader, and I’ve used it for nearly a year without any problem. It does save me some heavy weights and money as well.
And I’ve compared the most popular ebook readers right now in the market in another answer here, guess you’ll be interested:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100618220022AAmYwZ0
And in case you don’t know, Amazon just put a big price slash on the Kindle, and it is now a good time to get it. I put the link below for you to check it out yourself.
Hope it helps
Generally, professors don’t even really care if you have the book or not unless you will be using it frequently in class. So if you need it during classes, make sure you can access your e-book in class. And as long as you can get your assignments done, it shouldn’t be a problem at all. You might also want to check out this article for other ways to save on books: http://makecollegereality.com/succeed/getting-books/secrets-to-saving-on-books.html
Many students use ebook readers in the college, so I don’t think there’ll be any problem.
If you plan to read textbooks in PDF, it’ll be better to go for the Kindle. It just had an upgrade on PDF handling, so it read PDF better compared to other ebook readers:

The Amazon Kindle has better good support for textbooks as well, as Amazon has signed contract with some big textbook publishers to have textbooks published in Kindle ebook format. I’ve mentioned quite a lot about textbooks on the Amazon Kindle, in another answer here:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090720135726AAUiQMG
And here you can find textbooks for the Kindle:

You can choose between the Kindle DX and the Kindle 2. Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:

Hope this helps.
