Don’t worry, there is no eyestrain problem with the Kindle. I think I’ve read over 10 books with my Kindle 2, my experience is very close to reading books. You can know more from this review too:http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i…
So the Kindle is using eInk and it is not back-lit. If you want to read in the dark, just get the light here, it works great:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TXZ…
One final thing. There are some websites that you can get free books for your Kindle. This one is one of the biggest, it provides over 20,000 free books:http://manybooks.net/
    Hope this helps.

I’m a Kindle 2 owner and I like it very much.
I think I’ve read over 30 books with my Kindle so far, and it’s really like reading actual books. I often read for long hours and don’t feel tired, sometimes I just forgot I’m holding the device… The e-ink of the Kindle is really working well.
I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle. It talks something about reading experience with the Kindle too:http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i…http://www.speedreaderxreview.com/is-kin…
Finally, it is good for you that Amazon recently announced a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now $60 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle. So take the chance.
    Hope it helps :)
