Actually go into a store an look at an ebook reader – Barnes and Noble should have an actual working Nook in stock at all their locations. Readers like the Nook use "E-Ink" which is black "ink" against a white background… They do not use light to display the image and look MUCH more like real paper than a PC display. Since they do not "glow" you need light, just like a real book, to read, but they are also much easier on the eyes…

Battery life is measure in days or weeks on an ebook reader, measured in hours on a pc/smart phone..

The Nook is a hybrid device, using e-ink to display a book, but also has a color touch-screen running Android that can be used for other purposes like playing games etc.

The Nook has thousands of free older books available for it, as do many programs like Aldiko for any of the dozens of different Android phones (Motorola Droid, G1, Hero, etc.)

A pocket pc will do a LOT more for you as far as games, software, internet, phone (possibly), and office. Though the screen is only about 3". an ebook as a much bigger screen but thats basically all it does, lets you read books. I personaly would go with the pocket pc, just beacsue it can do alot more, but i dont know if i could ever read books on a screen that small.
